I practiced gratitude and this is what I learned
Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns
what we have into enough, and more.
- Melody Beattie
When you are grateful for what you have, more is attracted to
you. I’ve learned that you can have it all and feel like you have nothing. Material possessions often loses its appeal
in time. Too often we are lead to believe we do not have enough. We become
obsessed with getting more. But more rarely makes anyone happy.
There is
nothing wrong with wanting more. The problem is not knowing why. Practicing
gratitude helps us to understand why. It keeps us from falling into the trap of
temporary satisfaction.
Gratitude
grounds you in purpose and principal. Accumulating things to fill a void rarely
works. Material possessions cannot make you happy. Only your attitude towards
those objects make you happy. Take for example a child who loves his or her
favorite toy. The toy does not have to be expensive or impressive for him or her
to love it. It only needs to be special.
This can be understood
by looking at your favorite possessions. You probably own something that is
worth the world to you. A stranger may not give it a second look, but you value
that it based on your personal connection to it. This is why when people sell
their homes, they always seek a higher price then what the market says it’s
worth. This often has more to do with the personal connection with the home
then its worth on paper.
Gratitude
teaches us to make personal connections with things we love. What you love you
appreciate. When you appreciate the things in your life, more of the same is attracted
to you. Even when things may seem to not go our way, practicing gratitude helps
us cope with hardship. It presents a positive solution to difficult problems. Having
a daily gratitude practice empowers you. The struggles you encounter no longer
become roadblock’s, but challenges we enthusiastically accept and overcome.
